SAME ROADS - SAME RIGHTS - SAME RULES

Cyclists should expect and demand safe accommodation on every road, just as do all other users. Nothing more is expected. Nothing less is acceptable.

Bicycle Georgia Supports Vehicular Cycling Advocacy
SAME ROADS - SAME RIGHTS - SAME RULES
What is a Vehicular Cyclist?

In growing numbers, cyclists are now seeing the result of treating bicyclists as pedestrians on wheels and are seeking alternatives to the almost exclusive emphasis and funding toward separate designated places where "bikes belong." Vehicular cyclists coexist with other traffic by operating their bicycles as vehicles in agreement with the rules established for vehicular traffic. They feel that this is the best possible world for cycling in a country with the best roads in the world. They do however feel that improvement is often needed. Vehicular Cyclist advocates demand full rights as vehicle operators and are working for better education, road design that incorporates bicycle traffic provision, and safe accommodation on every road.

Vehicular cyclists oppose what has become politically correct and popular "American bicycle advocacy"- often well intentioned and giving lip-service to cyclists' rights, but actually reinforcing public belief and government policy that bicyclists are pedestrians-on-wheels requiring special rules and separate facilities- ideally removed from roads entirely onto shared bicycle/pedestrian sidewalks and park-and-ride trails through the woods paid for with transportation funds. Unfortunately, in America today these toy-bicycle individuals, bicycle clubs, bicycle advocacy organizations, bicycle manufacturers, transportation planners and government agencies dominate an American bicycle advocacy which measures success in terms of ribbon-cutting ceremonies. Vehicular Cyclists offer another choice.

On-Road Vehicular Cycling is the Safest Form of Bicycling. By Far.
Cyclists Do Not Gain Rights at Ribbon-Cutting Ceremonies
In the state of Georgia, bicycles are vehicles and cyclists are vehicle operators with the RIGHT to be safely accommodated everywhere they wish to ride, just as every other vehicle operator demands.

More and more, so called "Bikes Belong" advocacy means "bikes REALLY belong" out of the way: on trails, paths, in gutter-bike lanes or wherever the bicycle industry, highway transportation officials, and the motoring public say they belong- whatever restrictions needed to get bicyclists out of the way. Is that your "bicycle advocacy" too?

Bicycle Georgia
Same Roads - Same Rights - Same Rules
Bicycle operators have full rights to use our roadways and must accept the same responsibilities demanded of every other operator. The most basic of these responsibilities is compliance with traffic regulations. Georgia Bicycle Federation believes that an enhanced network of roads can be safely shared if all users will adhere to traffic regulations and apply common sense and courtesy. Illegal or irresponsible action by any user must not be tolerated.
